Sergio Perez is hoping he is "ready" for a Ferrari race seat at the end of 2011.

The Mexican rookie, who so impressed with his one-stopper in Melbourne two weeks ago, had a less stirring outing in Malaysia when a rival’s loose part caused him to retire.

He is at Sauber this year with the backing not only of the Mexican giant Telmex, but also Ferrari, as he heads the famous Italian marque’s driver development academy.

Ferrari supplies engines, transmission and KERS to Hinwil based Sauber.

Felipe Massa had a poor season with Ferrari last year, and despite the Brazilian having a contract through 2012 it is suggested he must perform exceptionally this season to keep the drive.

Asked if he covets the seat, 21-year-old Perez told BBC One television: "If I was to say no I would be lying. For sure it’s a dream for me to drive for them one day.

"(On 2012) I think it’s too early to say. I think there’s a long way to go for me, lots to learn and a lot of work ahead of me. I hope I can be ready for something like this by the end of this year," he added.
