Overcast and predominantly dry conditions greeted the ten teams in action at Jerez this morning with all heading out for early laps ahead of forecast light rain. The second pre-season features Force India Mercedes, Virgin Cosworth and Red Bull Renault for the first time – the latter unveiling the new RB6 earlier today.
Less than hour into the session Nico Rosberg moved to the top of the timesheets in the Mercedes GP W01 with a best time of 1:20.927. The light rain soon intensified as expected, sending most back to the pits for adjustments ahead of wet weather running.
As of 13.00 local time, Rosberg remains fastest while Red Bull is getting up to speed with Mark Webber back in action for the first time since the season finale in Abu Dhabi last year.
The latest Adrian Newey creation did falter just ahead of the lunch break however, stranding Webber on track and briefly bringing out the red flags.
Virgin Racing did not take to the circuit this morning having spent the night preparing the VR-01 for its maiden run. Timo Glock is expected to be on track for the new team shortly.
