Former F1 driver Marc Surer says he can understand rumours Jenson Button is ready to call time on his 16-year formula one career.

It is expected the Briton will make his announcement this weekend at his ’second home race’ in Japan.

"In his place I would have already thrown in the towel," Surer told Speed Week.

"After the good years, to now be at the back with McLaren must hurt," the Swiss, now a pundit for German television, added. "And it hurts to see him in this situation."

Surer, however, says McLaren’s struggle is a different matter for Button’s teammate, the two-time champion and former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso.

"With Fernando, I can understand it," he said, referring to the Spaniard’s acceptance of the Honda-powered situation at present.

"He at least gets his tens of millions, but with Jenson, I would understand if he goes," added Surer.
