He may be 66 years old but Stig Blomqvist saw off drivers who were less than half his age to finish 12th overall on the International Jännerrallye, which finished in Freistadt yesterday.
In doing so, the 1984 world champion scored points in the FIA ERC Production Car Cup at the wheel of his Gassner Motor Sport-run Mitsubishi Lancer.
Not only did the Swede largely manage to stay out of trouble, he also thoroughly enjoyed himself on stages that featured considerably less snow than his homeland.
“These days, I just drive for fun,” he said. “But it’s always a pleasure to catch up with old friends and feel a bit of competition again, even though I don’t take it too seriously these days. I’m an old man but it doesn’t bother me!”
One of the next challenges for Blomqvist will be completely different: he is planning to drive a Tuthill Porsche 911 on the East African Safari Classic at the end of the year.
