Giandomenico Basso has been given extra reason to celebrate after being chosen as the latest recipient of the prestigious Colin McRae IRC Flat Out Trophy following his victory on Rally San Marino earlier today.

Basso, who was fastest on five stages and won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge qualifier by 2.8s following a thrilling fight with Andreas Mikkelsen, said: “I’m very proud to receive this prize. I was a very big fan of Colin McRae since I was younger so this is very special.”

IRC Manager Jean-Pierre Nicolas, who forms part of the judging panel along with Eurosport’s Gilbert Roy and Colin McRae’s father Jim McRae, explained why Basso had been chosen as the award winner.

“This was the first time Giandomenico had driven on gravel for two years but his speed was incredible,” said Nicolas. “He really deserves this award.”
