Citroen stars to hold position

Hirvonen instructed to follow Loeb in Argentina

Mikko Hirvonen has been told to hold position behind Citroen team leader Sebastien Loeb on Philips Rally Argentina.

Loeb starts Saturday afternoon’s loop of stages leading Hirvonen by 2.1s following a thrilling battle between the pair during this morning’s three runs.

However, with third-placed Dani Sordo slipping back in his Ford Fiesta and seemingly now no longer a threat to Loeb and Hirvonen, Citroen team chief Yves Matton wants to ensure a one-two finish for the French make.

That would mean a seventh victory in South America for Loeb and a 70th WRC career triumph for the eight-time world champion providing he encounters no problems between now and the finish in Villa Carlos Paz on Sunday afternoon.

Matton said: “I spoke to both the crews and they agreed that it was the best solution. Sebastien almost went off on [stage nine] and we can’t afford to throw away a possible one-two, which would be great result for both world championships. It’s a bit hard on Mikko after what happened in Portugal, but I hope he’ll be able to stand on the top step of the podium again with us very soon.”

Hirvonen said he understood the team’s decision. "You understand the team wants to be sensible and I understand it. I am disappointed, because I need the top points to stay in the drivers’ championship after what happened in Portugal."
