Double world champion José María López proved he’s human after all when a rare mistake cost him a shot at a podium finish in the FIA WTCC AFRIQUIA Race of Morocco Main Race.
López was holding Tiago Monteiro’s Honda at a bay when he slid wide at Turn 10 and allowed the Portuguese driver back ahead.
“I managed to get the better of Tiago, but then it was my turn to make a mistake,” said the Citroën driver.
Despite the uncharacteristic error in wet conditions, López continues to top the WTCC standings with an increased 14-point advantage over Monteiro.
“The aim was to stretch my lead at the top of the world championship, and I have done that,” said López, who took second behind Tom Coronel in the Opening Race from seventh on the grid. “We mustn’t relax, as our rivals have never been closer to us.”
