The fight for the Yokohama Trophy gets hotter at every race. At the latest event in Austria, Alex MacDowall claimed his first victory, becoming the sixth different winner in twelve races.

At the wheel of his bamboo-engineering Chevrolet Cruze, MacDowall claimed a sixth position overall in Salzburgring’s Race 1, that was his best WTCC result so far, and won the Yokohama Trophy from Pepe Oriola and Norbert Michelisz.

“It was fantastic to have the first win, it has given me much more confidence and there’s a real buzz now in the whole team going into the next round at Portimão,” he commented. “We were strong all weekend, right from the start, and the car worked really well. The championship is going to be tough to achieve so I’m just aiming now to try and get as many wins as we can for the rest of the season.”

When the second half of the season is about to start, three drivers look set for an exciting title fight. Oriola is currently leading the standings with 90 points in his SEAT León, but BMW drivers Michelisz (80 pts) and Stefano D’Aste (69 pts) are close enough to represent a serious threat. Especially after they both proved capable to claim overall victories in the championship.
