Elfyn Evans plans another safety-first drive at Rally Argentina (23 - 26 April) before stepping up his pace when the FIA World Rally Championship returns to Europe in May.
He was one of the few frontline drivers to deliver an error-free performance at Rally Guanajuato Mexico last weekend and was rewarded by equalling his career-best fourth place. Evans is now fifth in the drivers’ points.
“We felt we had a lot more to give, but there was a lot more to lose than to gain so we just had to get it to the end,” he said. “When we get back to Europe we can look at going harder but it’s important to get two solid results on the two long-haul events.
“The main objective was to have a solid mistake-free run and we did that, although it was frustrating at times not being able to push to the maximum, on Sunday especially,” Evans told wrc.com.
The Welshman’s only scare came on the opening night when he clipped some tyres with his Ford Fiesta RS at the super special stage at León’s motor racing circuit. In contrast, seven World Rally Car drivers were sidelined during Friday’s first full day.
“We knew we needed a good result and we managed to achieve that. We can be happy with that, but obviously the driving satisfaction isn’t quite up there. That was much better in Sweden and Monte-Carlo when we were consistently setting competitive times,” he added.
