Luis Monzón has admitted he thought he was too old to finish on the podium in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge until he was proved wrong on the second round of the series last week.

The 45-year-old Spaniard claimed third overall on Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés in a Peugeot 207 Super 2000 that he had not driven for four years.

“The last time I raced this car was in 2008 and it takes time to find the right rhythm with a car like this,” said Monzón. “I never thought I would get this result because it’s a difficult race and I thought I would need to be 20 years younger. But I put all my strength and my heart into this and in the end I got the result so I’m very happy.”
