Mexico will become a motorsport hotspot this afternoon when the country hosts the FIA Formula One World Championship for the 18th time. From 2005-2009, Mexico was a regular on the WTCC trail with the Puebla circuit staging the action on four occasions.

Italy’s Fabrizio Giovanardi was the first driver to win WTCC Race of Mexico, taking the honours for Alfa Romeo on 26 June 2005. German Peter Terting was the weekend’s other winner, while Rickard Rydell and Yvan Muller took a win apiece in what would turn out to be Mexico’s World Touring Car Championship farewell on 22 March 2009.

A further six drivers won in Mexico, including current WTCC frontrunners Tiago Monteiro (2008) and Muller (2009). Notably no driver scored more than one victory, while four qualified on pole position.
